I have been using Screen Time Labs application to control my kids’ smart phone for many months. The app works well on my kid’s Samsung S5, but facing trouble on both ASUS.
It works horribly on iPhone 5s and I patiently communicate with the company asking them all the possible solutions but so far it remains problematic. This has caused a lot of trouble between my kids and I since the restriction is not implemented as it should. Especially when the iPhone is blocked unnecessarily that I have to disable the app entirely to regain access.
I have been using Screen Time Parental Control to monitor my children’s usage of smartphones for several months. Tensions occurred several times, kids gone mad at me for what I did. We talked about it. We discussed. Sometimes we disagreed, but so far Alhamdulillah most of the time we managed to agree on certain shared decisions which also helping me to become their good and responsible daddy.
A gastronomical paradise and home to hundreds of colourful festivals- Malaysia is a beautiful, naturally blessed, diverse country. It has developed itself enormously in the past 50 years. Interestingly, the biggest roundabout in the world is located at Putrajaya in Malaysia.
It was a period of anxiety.
Some or my kids were doing well with the restriction but the others were not happy about it. When I was in my lecture, I received messages from them asking me why I blocked this and that, not being fair to them, and causing them difficulties.
As parents, I had the inclination to treat their complaints with belittlement. “I know what is good and what is not, you should just follow” kind of attitude sometimes got me. But I kept reminding myself that my original intention was to shape them. I cannot do this if I am harsh, plus ironically permissive. I have to remain gentle, but firm.
In my home country, I avoid giving my kids smart phones and constantly discussed with them to reduce peer pressure. After moving to Finland, I decided to give them smart phones believing that the way they’re using them can be shaped with proper discussion and supportive monitoring app. As a student of the learning sciences and technology, I am not blindly experimenting them with my kids, but what makes the difference is my own progress from a complete novice to an expert-to-be.
With knowledge, and meaningful education my kids currently experience, I think that learning to use technology for both education and entertainment can be nurtured.
SIG27 was a unique experience for me especially when I reflect it as a part of the process in transforming a novice to an expert. On top of all the introductory and core courses we had this Autumn semester, SIG27 also exposed me not only to the theories, researches and current trends in the field of learning sciences, but also to experience constructively in a very coherent way how a student and research-to-be should have, cognitively, emotionally, socially and perhaps spiritually too.
“What do you think about your future? Frankly, I never seen someone at your age, can draw as beautiful and as detailed as what you do” I told my daughter.
Her academic is not yet, as good as her brother. But her talent, skills and hard work on drawing are great. And she is good at it. I want my daughter to know that I sincerely admire her ability and I don’t want her academic subjects overshadow her speciality.
“I want to become an artist. A painter!” she replied.
“That is good. I have an opinion. In our country, there are not many people who can sustain their life being artists selling paintings. They are great and world class artists but our society are still not in love with arts as we want. We need to educate them, so they will pay good money for high class masterpiece. You can use your skills in many ways. Even digital” I tried to broaden her perspective.
“I want to open a school camp teaching children painting!” she said.
I remember many years ago, I was invited to give a talk on our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH to Khalifah Model School’s kids. I wasn’t part of the school’s team back then. An outsider, and most of the kids do not know me. My concern was, I like talking. I can talk on and on for long hours. But that would not serve the purpose of the session. It was part of the school’s celebration to commemorate the mawlid of our beloved Prophet sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam .
I need to strategise a way to make the content relevant to the 7-12 years old primary school children. I decided to create a small game.
